Late Rally Burns Highlanders in Series Opener

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program fell to Campbell 4-2 on Friday afternoon, despite leading for the first six innings of the meeting.

Starting pitcher Jessie Marvin was about as good as it gets through the first six frames as she held the Camels scoreless over that span. Marvin totaled seven strikeouts on the afternoon, including her 300th career strikeout coming in the opening batter of the game.

In the bottom of the first, freshman Cori McMillan hit a towering shot to right field that cleared the light post for a solo home run. Now with a lead, the Highlanders settled in.

Radford would strike again in the fourth inning to double their lead as McMillan led off the inning by lining a double into the left-center gap. Emily Smith continued her hot streak of hitting in conference play with a single to left that advanced McMillan to third and Smith showed some heads up baserunning by advancing to second on the throw. Cassi Barbato skied one into deep center which was enough to score McMillan and make it 2-0.

A brutal seventh inning spelled doom for the Highlanders as the first five Camels reached base and ultimately led to four runs being scored in the inning. Smith added to her impressive afternoon with a great throw from center field cutting down the advancing runner to third in a double play that helped limit the damage.

Smith and McMillan continue their hot hitting in conference play as both have batting averages over .300 and double digit hits this spring. McMillan's home run was her 11th of the season bringing her into a tie for 10th-most home runs in a single season hit by a Radford player. The last Highlander to hit 11 or more in a season was Hunter Mundy in 2019.
