Softball Falls in Pair of Extra Innings Battles with Campbell

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program fell in a pair of extra inning affairs Saturday afternoon in the doubleheader conclusion of the series with Campbell. The Highlanders got some spectacular pitching out of the two starters Skyler DeHart and Emily Spingarn in both games.

Game 1
In game one Radford was locked in a tight pitching battle as DeHart had one of her best outings of the spring tossing eight innings giving up just one earned run. DeHart got some help by the Highlander defense which was stellar in backing up her efficient performance. DeHart induced weak contact not allowing a hit until the sixth inning.

Radford's offense made solid contact all afternoon despite the one run to show for it on the scoreboard. The Highlanders got that run thanks to Rachel Smith who hit a laser to the right-center gap scoring Jordan Moss. In the first inning Radford was able to load the bases with one out, but two quick outs in the field ended the threat.

Cori McMillan's hot hitting against Big South competition continued into today as she collected two hits in the front end of the doubleheader. With a hit in the first inning, Emily Smith also officially raised her batting average .100 points since the start of conference play.

On the defensive end of things Jordan Moss had a great game one in left field including a diving grab into the wall in the top of the eighth that held the Camels to just the one run. Emily Smith out in center also had a great running grab while early in the game Rachel Smith made an over the back catch in left field to help keep the no-hitter intact.

Game 2
The second game of the day was another pitchers' duel as the two squads each only scored one run through the first seven innings setting up for another exciting extra inning game. Spingarn got the starting nod in the second game and was excellent giving up just one run in six innings while also collecting seven strikeouts.

McMillan was bumped up to the lead off spot for game two and provided the Highlanders lone run of the game. McMillan hit her second home run of the weekend and 12th overall on the season as the freshman continues to climb up the single-season rankings.

Moss, Emily Smith and Marvin also collected hits in the game, with Marvin's coming in the eighth inning setting up McMillan for a chance to play hero. Campbell pitched around McMillan in a four-pitch walk however and gave Radford two runners on with two outs. Campbell held on to win 2-1, however, for the second time on the day.

Up Next
The Highlanders are back on the road next weekend for their final road Big South series. Radford is set to take on Hampton with a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
