Softball Takes Big Series Victory at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hampton winning the first game in comeback fashion but dropping the second game. Radford finishes the weekend with a pair of wins to seal up their third Big South series win of the season.

Game 1
In game one Radford showed true heart in not just coming back late but holding on to eventually win in extra innings. Skyler DeHart got the starting nod and for the second time in seven days pitched into extra innings. This time DeHart got the well-deserved win navigating multiple Hampton runners to give up just three runs.

In the third inning Hampton was able to gain the first lead of the day and break the ice with two doubles that put the Lady Pirates up 2-0. After a scoreless first Radford found their way onto the scoreboard in the fifth inning.

The first three Highlanders all reached base to start the fifth inning, loading the bases with none out. Cori McMillan broke through with a double that allowed Barbato to score and cut the deficit to one. Abby Wilson followed her up with one of the biggest hits of the day. Wilson doubled to right field scoring two and giving Radford the 3-2 lead.

Hampton was able to scratch across one more run in the sixth to tie the game at three-all. That forced extra innings for the third time in Radford's last four games. This time the Highlanders opened up extra innings strong.

Emily Smith walked to start the inning and then Jordan Moss doubled. After a Rachel Smith walk, Cassi Barbato came through once again for the Highlanders with a single that gave the team a 4-3 edge and ultimately won the game.

In game one three Highlanders finished with multi-hit games. McMillan and Wilson both recorded two hits while Barbato finished the day with three hits to go with the game-winning RBI.

Game 2
The second game of the day Hampton was able to avoid the sweep by stealing the final game of the series 4-0. The Highlanders' offense for the first time all weekend struggled to get going collecting four hits on the day with two coming in the seventh inning.

McMillan picked up a double in her lone hit of the day while Barbato and Poole also recorded hits. Rachel Smith also drew a walk, but that was Radford's only baserunners on the day.

Only two of Hampton's runs for the game were earned. Jessie Marvin came in relief during the fourth inning and slammed the door on any more scoring. Marvin threw 2.2 innings facing the minimum while striking out two batters.

In the seventh inning Radford did put together a rally in their final chance. Barbato got the offense going and with two outs Poole collected her second hit of the game to put two runners on. The rally ended there, though, as Hampton held on to win 4-0.
