Poole’s Thrilling Walk-Off Highlights Series Victory Over Charleston Southern

RADFORD, VA. –The Radford softball program picked up a crucial series victory over Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon. Hannah Poole had a walk-off double in the back-half of the doubleheader that sealed the winning weekend.

Game 1
The first game of the day saw both teams trading offensive blows against each other as both teams finished with ten or more hits on the scoreboard. Charleston Southern started the game with a 1-0 lead, but Radford responded immediately in the bottom of the first.

Cori McMillan drew a walk to start the game and then advanced all the way to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Abby Wilson thanks to some smart baserunning. Rachel Smith did the rest, roping a single into left to score McMillan and tie the game at one-all.

After the Buccaneers scored the opening inning run, starting pitcher Skyler DeHart did a great job in keeping her opponent at bay over the next four innings. DeHart allowed just two runs over that span, coming in the form of a two-run homer in the fifth.

By then the Highlanders had already built themselves a 5-1 lead thanks to a huge fourth inning. With two outs in the inning, Smith went to work once again lacing a double into center to score McMillan once again and give Radford the lead.

From there Cassi Barbato added one of her three hits on the day to put runners on the corners. The two-out rally forced Charleston Southern to call a mound visit. Coming out of that mound visit Jordan Moss wasted no time crushing the first pitch she saw for a three-run homer to left field for the 5-1 lead.

After that, though, Charleston Southern scored seven unanswered runs on the Highlanders including a four-run sixth inning that put the visitors ahead for good and an eventual 8-5 finish.

Game 2
The Highlanders opened the second game of the day the exact same way as the first game of the day. Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first, Radford responded once again to scratch across a run to tie the game. With McMillan on second, Wilson singled to the shortstop and after a throwing error McMillan was able to score.

Charleston Southern scored two more runs in the third and one run in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Radford made solid contact throughout the early innings but struggled to cross any more runners over home plate. Charleston Southern seemed to be cruising until Radford mounted an incredible comeback over the final two innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Barbato got things started right with a double to left center. Moss replaced her on second base after a fielder's choice which led Poole to draw a walk to keep the rally alive. Lindsay Hunter provided a single to right and suddenly the bases were loaded with just one out.

Taylor Breidt had the first big hit as she singled to the shortstop allowing Moss to score and make it a 4-2 game. Jessie Marvin, more known for her work in the circle and keeping runs off the board, flipped the script and grounded a single to right field to score two more runs and tie the game at four-all.

Marvin set down the Buccaneers in order in the seventh to give Radford the chance to finish things off in the bottom half. Smith drew a walk to begin the inning, but back-to-back strikeouts put the comeback in jeopardy.

Poole stepped up to the plate down to the inning's final out and also facing an 0-2 count. That didn't faze Poole as she sent a grounder past the outstretched second baseman which then found its way all the way to the wall allowing Smith to score, walking off the game 5-4 in Radford's favor.

Many Highlanders stepped up and had huge offensive outputs this weekend. Barbato collected six hits over the three games including two doubles to fuel the base paths. Breidt also had a huge weekend with three hits in six at bats with an RBI. McMillan and Smith also hit over .400 with Smith collecting a team-high four RBIs and McMillan scoring a team-high five runs.

Up Next
The Highlanders will finish up the regular season next weekend when they host North Carolina A&T for a trio of games with action slated to kick off on Friday. The series is sure to be an exciting one with the final two postseason spots still up for grabs.
