RADFORD, Va. – Veteran hurler
Jessie Marvin came one out away from making history as she tossed 6.2 no-hit innings to lead the Radford softball team to a 6-1 victory over North Carolina A&T on Friday morning.
Game one of the must-win series against the Aggies was moved up to an 11 a.m. start time due to incoming inclement weather and it didn't faze Marvin one bit. The Gillsville, Ga. native kept the opposition off the bases entirely spare a couple of walks by the opposition.
She still reached the seventh inning unscathed however, and recorded two outs to come face-to-face with a new addition to the record books. She fired a pitch across the plate which resulted in rare hard contact and the ball hit the grass over the right fielder's head. The very next batter grounded out to close out the game.
Marvin's final line included 104 pitches across a seven-inning complete game that featured five strikeouts, giving her a ninth win on the year.
Freshman first baseman
Cassi Barbato got the offensive support of her teammate started right away, stroking a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the first inning. Fellow freshmen
Cori McMillan and
Rachel Smith got in on the fun with a three-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the fourth inning, respectively.
Smith ended the day a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored and an RBI while McMillan continued her torrid debut season with a 2-for-4 day that added two runs scored and a trio of RBI to her tally.
Kayla Douglas took the loss for the Aggies, allowing three earned runs in 1.0+ innings of work while Joey Barkhimer was much more effective to the tune of three runs allowed over 5.0 innings in the circle.
MARVIN AND SNOOKS
Jessie Marvin may have come up a hair short on Friday, but she is the last Highlander to record a no-hitter. She went 5 innings without giving up a hit to George Mason on March 1, 2020.
Kellie Snooks owns the last 7-inning no-hitter by a Highlander though, keeping Kent State at bay all the way back on March 21, 2010.
UP NEXT
Weather permitting, Radford and N.C. A&T are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Radford Softball Stadium on Sunday. Game times are currently set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with a Senior Day celebration set to take place prior to the first game.
