Offense Slugs Highlanders Past Aggies on Senior Day

RADFORD, VA. –The Radford softball program finished off a series sweep over North Carolina A&T taking both games of Sunday's doubleheader. Radford won the first game 8-0 and kept the bats hot in game two winning 12-3.

Before the first game of the day, Radford honored their three seniors in a pregame ceremony. Hannah Morris, Lindsay Hunter and Jessie Marvin all spent their entire careers as Highlanders and were all honored. The trio of seniors would also play a pivotal role in both victories.

Game 1
The first game of the day saw the Highlanders taking advantage of multiple Aggies miscues while also crushing the cover off the ball to the tune of the 8-0 win. Radford wasted no time getting the bats moving scoring three first inning runs.

Cassi Barbato provided another RBI single to open up the scoring like she did in game one of the series. Hunter squared up a ball to the third baseman who airmailed the throw allowing two more Highlanders to score.

The second inning played host to a special moment for one of Radford's seniors. Morris, getting the start as the team's designated hitter, crushed the first home run of her career. The absolute no-doubter to right field was the perfect send-off from the home field for Morris who has spent the last four years with Radford.

Rachel Smith added another home run for the Highlanders in the fourth inning, a laser to the opposite field. The reigning Big South Freshman of the Week continued her hot streak with two more runs and the homer in game one.

Cori McMillan and Barbato ended the day with multi-hit games. Abby Wilson, Taylor Breidt and Hunter all also contributed hits to power their late-season offensive surge. In the circle Marvin was practically flawless again for Radford in her final start at home, pitching into the fifth inning and allowing no runners to score.

Game 2
The second game of the day was more of the same for Radford as the offense stayed hot for a season-high 12 runs. It marked the third time Radford had scored double-digit runs in a game this season with the last time occurring back on March 22nd when the team scored 10 against James Madison.

After the Aggies scratched across their first run of the day in the top of the first, the Highlanders' offense backed up starting pitcher Emily Spingarn with another pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Hannah Poole drew a bases loaded walk and Jordan Moss placed a groundout perfectly to score the second run.

The second inning was the biggest of the day as Radford sent six runners across home plate to balloon the lead to 8-1. Emily Smith singled to start the inning off and, after a Breidt walk, McMillan sent Smith home for the first run. Wilson singled to left to score Breidt and then Rachel Smith followed her up with another single to score McMillan.

Poole broke the inning wide open for Radford as she hit her first of two home runs in the game, both would wind up being two-run homers. From there, Radford was able to slowly chip away the rest of the game to the eventual run-rule defeat. Poole's second home run of the day was in walk-off fashion in the sixth inning, securing the series sweep.

Five Highlanders recorded multi-hit games in game two. McMillan, R. Smith, Poole and Moss all finished with two while Wilson had a big game with three hits and three RBI's. Spingarn was efficient with three solid innings of work striking out two batters while Skyler DeHart finished the game with three innings of two-run ball.

Up Next
While the regular season came to a close this weekend, the conference tournament now looms for the Highlanders. Radford came into the weekend one game out of a playoff spot behind Winthrop. After the series sweep, the Highlanders solidified their spot in the Big South tournament by finishing two games ahead of Winthrop for the sixth seed.

The complete tournament bracket and match-ups are set to be announced by the conference office after the conclusion of Gardner-Webb vs. Campbell this upcoming Monday, May 9th.
