Highlanders Fall in Doubleheader at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. –The Radford softball program dropped both contests to a tough Longwood squad in their Big South doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Game 1
In game one the Highlanders got off on the right foot thanks to Rachel Smith who crushed the first pitch of the game over the right field fence for the early 1-0 lead. It was the third time this season a Highlander led off a game with a home run, and the second time Smith has done it herself.

Longwood struck back in the bottom of the first with two runs, although both runs were unearned due to an error. The Lancers would double the run output in the third inning with two more runs due to back-to-back home runs.

Skyler DeHart entered the game after that and kept the Highlanders in the game. DeHart escaped the third without allowing another run and would throw another pair of scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth innings. Longwood's ace starting pitcher who ranks top-five in the conference in ERA was effective in limiting the Highlanders offense.

Radford wouldn't cross the plate again until an impressive two-out rally in the seventh. Down to their last out Hannah Poole and Cassi Barbato both drew walks. Emily Smith then singled up the middle to score Poole and make it a 6-2 game. The comeback attempt was stopped there though as Longwood got the last out to seal the 6-2 final.

Game 2
The second game of the day was a close battle through the first four innings. Longwood was able to score in the first inning again to take an early 1-0 edge. After that, starting pitcher Jessie Marvin threw three straight innings without giving up a hit.

The Highlanders would be searching for their first hit until the fourth inning. They got it in a big way after Hannah Poole drew a walk. Cori McMillan hit a double over the centerfielder's head that scored Poole and tied the game at 1-all.

An error and a pair of walks allowed Longwood to break the game open in the fifth inning, however. The Lancers struck for four runs to take a 5-1 lead. It was a lead they wouldn't give up the rest of the way.

In the top of the sixth inning the Highlanders got the bats fully moving. Jordan Moss led the game off and continues her hot hitting with a solo home run to center field. Poole reached via an error and then McMillan singled up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate. Cassi Barbato made some strong contact, but the ball went straight to the second baseman to end the threat.

After a tough bottom of the sixth, Emily Smith ended the scoring on the day with a solo home run to left field her first of the season. Spingarn drew a walk while Moss added another hit to her day as well.
