HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Radford track & field program wrapped up the third and final day of the Big South Outdoor Championships on Wednesday at the campus of High Point University. The day was highlighted by an extraordinary performance by
Austin Swallow in the javelin and steady performances by
Chloe Wellings with a pair of fourth-place finishes.
Swallow finally showed in competition what she did in practice all season, absolutely uncorking a javelin throw of 42.93m (140-10). The throw was good for second best in school history and a nearly six-meter personal best. Swallow led the competition until the second-to-last throw when Chloe Greene of Charleston Southern bested her by only one centimeter. Still, Swallow earned All-Conference honors with a second-place finish and eight important points for the team. All six of Swallows would have ranked in the top 10 in school history entering the day.
Wellings showed her class with a pair of excellent performances. First, in the 1,500m she ran strong and put herself into good position entering the bell lap before ultimately taking fourth place with a time of 4:37.03. Then, in the 5,000m, team tactics allowed Wellings to work her way through the field, narrowly chasing down a podium finish as well with a strong second half en route to another fourth-place finish in a time of 17:13.02.
It was
Parker Goldstein who opened the day for the Highlanders in the high jump where she made a collegiate best look easy. Goldstein cleared 1.60m (5-3) before narrowly missing on a lifetime best attempt at 1.63m. Goldstein's performance was good for seventh place and her first career points in a Big South Championship Meet.
Despite not competing this week, for her efforts in the classroom,
Rachel Millirons was also named to the Big South All-Academic team.
Other Highlanders In Action:
- The 4x100 team of Shaneece Smith, Denisha Hoosier, Kelsey Arnold and Talasjah Weathersby ran the sixth fastest time in school history with their 47.69 second performance.
- The 4x400 team of Julia Burkley, Breauna Lane, Hoosier and Maddie Wright ran a season-best time of 3:58.27. Hoosier recorded a 57.58 second third leg to lead the team.
