Radford Fights Back in Physical Tie with George Mason

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program overcame a first half deficit to George Mason Sunday night to work a 1-1 tie against a strong opponent. It was a physical game all night as both teams combined for nine yellow cards.

Radford had a tall task coming into Sunday night, hosting George Mason who had battled hard in a close loss 3-1 to one of the best teams in the country Virginia earlier in the week. The Highlanders intensity helped them out-shoot the Patriots 21-9 by game's end. Radford also won the corner kick battle with eight to George Mason's four.

Both teams were held scoreless through most of the first half until it was the Patriots who struck first. In the 33rd minute, Sarah DeWitt found the back of the net in the midst of a chaotic box. The 1-0 advantage would hold for the Patriots through the half.

Radford responded in the 62nd minute thanks to a perfectly placed free kick by Willson. Willson was set up just outside of the box where she placed a sharp shot just out of the reach of the stretching goalie. Tied up at one-all, Radford didn't let up the offensive attack.

June Stevens ripped off a shot on goal just a few minutes after Willson's goal followed by Paige Olson and Ashley Loundermon also recording shots. In the 75th minute, goalkeeper Jordan Phillips had one of her best saves of her collegiate career. A lone Patriot fired a shot from just fifteen feet out from the goal that Phillips stretched out and deflected to preserve the tie, and save the game for Radford.

Radford would get off a trio of corner kicks and multiple more shots before the game came to a close in a 1-1 tie. Kat Parris, Willson, Elyse Beaudry, Alexeis Kirnos, Amy Swain and Lilly Short all had multi-shot games. In the full 90 minutes in the net, Phillips allowed just the one goal while collecting three saves.

"I was really proud of the way we played the entire game," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "It turned into a physical match, and I was glad to see our team step up and compete. I was proud of our team coming back from being down 1-0. I would've loved to see them get the second goal, but it's still a good result against a great George Mason team."

Radford will hit the road for the first time in the 2022 season this upcoming week. The team heads to former Big South foe Hampton on Thursday, August 25th, before returning home to play Wofford on Sunday, August 28th.
