EMMITSBURG, Md. — Despite taking a 1-0 lead into the second half, the Radford men's soccer team was unable to hold on to the lead as they dropped a road match at Mount St. Mary's by a 4-1 final.
"This was a really disappointing result, especially based on how well we played for 65 minutes," said Radford head coach
Chris Barrett. "We hit the post [which would have made] it 2-0, but ended up giving up the equalizer off a free kick. From there, the momentum changed and we never found out rhythm again. Full credit to Mount St. Mary's for continuing to push their way into the game and getting the win. Another good learning experience for our young group as we look to improve everyday together."
The Highlanders (0-2-0) controlled possession in the first half, getting two shots on goal from
Cristian Cruz and another from
Hivan Kouonang. In the 44th minute, the visitors finally found paydirt, as
Asuka Kaneda played a lead pass to
Collin Hawes inside the penalty area. Hawes shot from just outside the six-yard box, and the ball deflected off of Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Ethan Russell into the net for a goal.
However, the advantage was short-lived, as the Mountaineers (1-1-0) struck on a goal by Ruben Kiers in the 68th minute to even the contest. That kickstarted a flurry of goals for The Mount in the second half, as they added markers in the 71st, 84th, and 89th minutes.
Despite the loss, Radford outshot Mount St. Mary's 19-11, with seven of those shots for the Highlanders being on goal. Radford also drew seven corner kicks while holding the Mountaineers to none, tilting the field in their favor.
Midfielder
Alex Kryazhev led the offensive effort with five shots on the evening.
