Highlanders Battle to Scoreless Draw At Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. — In a match that saw numerous high-quality scoring chances for both sides, the Radford men's soccer team fought to a 0-0 draw against Virginia Tech on Friday evening at Thompson Field.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group," said Radford head coach Chris Barrett. "We knew this was going to be a tough game against Virginia Tech, who are an excellent team. And to play teams of this caliber is truly an honor. But we came here in here to get a result, and we got the result that was good for us. Obviously, we wanted to win the game. I was very pleased with the amount of effort, teamwork, and heart this group showed. This will be a great building block for us going forward."

The Highlanders (0-2-1) held up well against their New River Valley neighbors, staving off an offensive barrage that saw the Hokies generate 12 shots on the night. The story of the game was Radford keeper Joseba Incera, who made five saves, including a spectacular diving save in the 85th minute on a free kick from just outside the penalty vox. Incera earned his first clean sheet of the season.

Virginia Tech (0-2-1) led the visitors in corner kicks, 10-3. However, the Highlanders defense stood tall. In the 45th minute, a Virginia Tech shot deflected off the cross bar, rebounding to the middle of the six-yard box. Incera then made anotther save on the rebound from Tech's Welnilton Da Silva, Jr., keeping the game scoreless.

Radford generated three shots as a team. It was a physical contest, as the two teams combined for 24 fouls.
