Women’s Soccer’s Thrilling Conference Opener Ends in Tie Against Campbell

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program mounted a comeback once again on Wednesday night with a late penalty kick goal by Alexeis Kirnos to tie Campbell 1-1 in the team's first Big South match-up.

Early in the game, Radford did a great job at creating scoring opportunities against a stout Campbell defense. In the first half alone the Highlanders attempted six shots and earned two corner kicks but were unable to hit the back of the net.

In the 20th minute with Campbell threatening to score, Avery Howell made a crucial defensive save off a Campbell shot to the empty corner of the net. Six minutes later, Campbell picked up their first yellow of the night which would also prove to be crucial later down the stretch. In the end, some stellar saves by Jordan Phillips in goal made it so Radford could hold the game to a 0-0 tie headed into halftime.

With an electric home crowd behind the team, Radford came out of the break looking to create an edge. Campbell struck in the 53rd minute, however, with a perfectly placed goal to take a 1-0 lead. Radford kept the pressure on and immediately got to work as Amy Swain placed a good shot that was saved by Campbell just a couple minutes after the opposing goal.

That pressure continued until the final 15 minutes of the game where Radford forced multiple Campbell mistakes that the Highlanders took advantage of. In the 77th minute, Campbell picked up two more yellow cards with one going to the bench. In the 78th minute, Campbell had a player collect their second yellow of the night which put the team down one player.

The Camels final yellow card of the night came inside the box and put the team down two players. The foul allowed Radford to set up for potential game-tying penalty kick. Kirnos stepped up for the Highlanders once again and she did not miss. The senior leader powered a shot past the goalie who made initial contact on the shot before the ball trickled to the back of the net.

With the game now tied up at one-all, Radford would get off two more shots on goal and a corner kick before the 90th minute marked the end of the match. Swain led the Highlanders with five shots while Olson also picked up three shots. Phillips rebounded well and finished the night with five saves playing the full 90 minutes.

"It was another great Radford and Campbell classic," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I thought both teams played well but I was really happy with how we took the challenge of playing last season's regular season champions and a team that knocked us out. We defended extremely well. It was two quality teams and an exciting Big South game. At the end would've loved to see us get the go-ahead goal, but to start off the conference season with a tie against a great team is a good result."

With tonight's tie, the historic series between Radford and Campbell will remain in a deadlock tie. Both team have beaten each other 11 times and tied twice. Over the last nine matches the two squads are also 4-4-1 against each other.

Radford's next conference match is set for this Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders hit the road for Clinton, S.C. where they will face Presbyterian with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
