Radford Defense Stands Strong, Offense Overwhelms Winthrop in 2-0 Win

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford women's soccer program continued their hot streak Wednesday afternoon on the road with a 2-0 victory over Winthrop. Kat Parris scored both goals for Radford in the match while the defense posted its third shutout of the season.

The Highlanders offense attacked early and attacked often for Wednesday's earlier than normal kickoff. In the first 20 minutes the Highlanders ripped off five shots to put the pressure on the Eagles. In the 23rd minute that offensive pressure turned into a goal.

Lilly Short got a shot off on goal that the opposing goalie was initially able to make a save on. As the ball trickled away, though, Parris picked it up and placed it easily for the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Parris' third of the season and first since September 4th against Marshall.

The beat went on for the Highlanders who got off four more shots before halftime. With a 1-0 lead it did not take long for Radford to double up that lead in the second half thanks to Parris once again.

After an Eagle defender deflected a cross into the box up into the air, Amy Swain and Parris came crashing in. Both Highlanders came in for the header with Parris making full contact on the ball to send it past the goalie for her second goal of the day. Parris moved her season goal total to four with the score and it secured the sophomore's fourth multi-goal game of her career.

From there the Highlanders were able to coast to victory while keeping the pressure on Winthrop. The defensive back line was elite all afternoon in keeping a zero on the scoreboard. While the box score doesn't do justice in showing it, Saleena Lynch, Avery Howell and Kayla Edwards each were excellent in eliminating any scoring opportunities for Winthrop. Jordan Phillips also collected three more saves during the full 90 minutes in the net.

"I thought we played well today especially with it being our second road game in a row," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I was proud we got our first shutout of the conference season. We moved the ball well today and created a lot of good opportunities. We can get more consistent but it's a good start to conference."

With today's win Radford moves their unbeaten streak to ten matches and is now 2-0-1 in Big South play a third of the way through the conference schedule. Radford is currently scheduled to host USC Upstate this Saturday.

Incoming weather from the remnants of Hurricane Ian may effect this weekend's schedule so be sure to stay tuned to RadfordAthletics.com and the Radford Women's Soccer social media accounts for updates.
