Traylor Flirts with Triple-Double, Highlanders Roll Past Buccaneers on Road

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's basketball program went on the road and took down Charleston Southern 60-46 Saturday afternoon behind another incredible performance by freshman Ashlyn Traylor who missed a triple-double by just two assists.

Radford came into Saturday's meeting needing a good start, something they've struggled with in the early half of this season. The Highlanders grinded out a tough first quarter and held the Buccaneers to just 11 points to get that good start and lead 14-11 by the end of the quarter.

Ashley Panem played a large role in that first quarter hitting a pair of free throws to account for six of the team's 14 points. The duo of threes made it ten-straight games now with a make from deep for the Broomfield, Co. native. The Highlanders also owned all four free throws in the opening quarter going three for four with a pair of makes from Carmen Williams.

After a 4-0 run briefly gave Charleston Southern back the lead in the second quarter, Radford used an 8-0 run of its own with made shots from Traylor and Panem. Leading 22-15, Radford cruised over the final five minutes of the second quarter and used a last-second layup by Vanessa Blake to lead 30-21 at halftime.

After holding the Buccaneers to just 21 points in the first half, the Highlanders defense continued to cause issues for their opponent and would hold them to just 25 points in the second half. With 15 points in each of the final two quarters, Radford was well on its way to victory.

Radford burst out the gates in the second half with a 9-0 punch that elevated the team to its biggest lead of the day at 39-23. Olivia Wagner, Rachel LaLonde, Blake and Williams all scored for Radford in that run which was thematic for the team on a day where everybody got involved on the offensive front.

After a late 5-0 run by the Buccaneers, Radford led 45-33 with ten minutes to go in the fourth. Carmen Williams broke the ice early in the fourth quarter with a huge and-one conversion that elevated her point total to 13 on the day. After a scoreless three minutes, Radford went to work on the free throw line as Traylor scored four more points to get her double-double.

Panem would ice the game with a pair of free throws and just 20 seconds to go to helpnd Radford hold on and win decisively 60-46. With just their second road win of the season, Radford picked up a big win today that moves their Big South record to an even three wins and three losses. When Radford's been confident on the road, they've been dominant. Each road win this season by Radford has come by a combined 30 points.

HOW ABOUT THAT DEFENSE?
Highlander opponents this week had a tough time scoring as neither team scored over 50 points. In those back-to-back games, Radford held Winthrop and Charleston Southern to just 30% (33-109) from the floor. The Eagles and Buccaneers were also a combined 19% (6-31) from three against the stout Highlander defense.

TRAYLOR ALMOST HITS A TRIPLE DOUBLE
Traylor once again was flirting with history for the Highlanders as the newcomer looks more like a seasoned veteran than a first timer on the college scene. With 13 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, Traylor left no doubt in filling out her third double-double of her career. Traylor's eight assists were by-far a game-high across both teams and just missed her previous career-high of nine.

WINNING THE BOARDS AND TURNOVER BATTLE
For the second straight game, Radford has excelled on the boards and at winning the turnover battle. Facing some big opponents in today's meeting, Radford stood up to the task and corralled 10 offensive rebounds with Blake and Traylor each pulling down three. Eight points came as second chance opportunities today and nine points came from turnovers.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders are back at home inside the Dedmon Center for a massive Big South match-up next Wednesday. On January 18th one of the current conference leaders Campbell comes to town for a pivotal game. Tip is currently set for 7 p.m. and will also be streamed on ESPN+.
