ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Junior midfielder Alex Kryazhev scored for the third time in four games, but it wasn't enough as the Radford men's soccer team fell, 4-1, to UNC Asheville on Saturday.
"This was another tough road Big South game," said Head Coach Chris Barrett. "Full credit to Asheville as they deserved to win today. We are still alive for conference play so I know the guys will keep working hard and believing in each other."
In the first half, the Highlanders trailed the Bulldogs early 1-0 after Asheville's Conor Behan curled a shot to the far-right post that would be just out of reach for goalkeeper Alex Eydelman.
Shortly after, in the 22nd minute of the match, Asheville's Behan struck again. Eydelman was able to save a shot from going into the net but an unlucky bounce allowed Behan to follow up and put it right down the middle for Behan to acquire his brace and make the scoreline 2-0. However, the Highlanders were able to respond in the 30th minute after a penalty against the Bulldogs set up Alex Kryazhev to take and net the penalty shot that would cut Asheville's lead and make the scoreline to 2-1 heading into the break.
Pace of play in the second half was much slower than the first as neither side saw many opportunities in the attack. But, midway through the second half that would change as a mistake in the back gave Asheville possession in a dangerous area and the Bulldog's Aysa Hamid was able to break loose and net one in the top left corner of the net to make the scoreline 3-1.
In the 86th minute the Highlanders committed a penalty in the box that would allow Asheville's Justin Fleer to net a goal for himself and give the Bulldog's a commanding 4-1 lead that would remain until the final whistle.
