Women’s Soccer Soars in Shutout Victory Over Winthrop

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer program won their seventh straight home match Saturday night with a dominant 2-0 win over Winthrop.
The Highlanders would use two second half goals to seal their shutout victory over the Eagles. It was the freshman Eileen Albers who struck first, scoring her sixth goal in the last three home matches for Radford. Jillian Silverstone connected with Albers off a corner kick and Albers put a strong head on it for the 1-0 advantage.
Radford's second goal came in the 73rd minute as Kayla Edwards netted her first goal of the season and second as a Highlander. The goal came off another corner kick, this time from June Stevens, and Helena Willson initially got a shot off, but it deflected to Edwards who didn't miss her opportunity to score.
After a nifty celebration by Edwards, Radford would cruise the rest of the way for the eventual 2-0 win. Radford controlled possession for most of the match but kept the shutout intact thanks to Lexi Radvanyi's work in the net. Radvanyi recorded four saves including a pair of outstretched dives in the first half that kept the Eagles quiet.
With the win Radford moves to 8-5-2 (4-1-1 in Big South) on the season and still undefeated at home (7-0). With 13 points in the conference standings Radford holds the second spot with two games remaining.
"The weather was a real factor today," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "The wind played a role in both halves, but I thought we played well in both. I was happy to see both of our goals come off set pieces. These conference games are all tight and we're really happy to win. On to the next one."
