Women’s Soccer Senior Day Victory Seals Perfect Home Season

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer program celebrated Senior Day and Alumni Weekend with another home win 1-0 over Gardner-Webb Saturday night, capping a perfect home season for the Highlanders with an 8-0 record.

Before the match Radford spent time honoring nine incredible seniors who have helped raise the program to new heights over the last four seasons. The Highlanders honored Trinity Veras, Amy Swain, Katelyn O'Donnell, Skyler Prosser, Bianca Plowman, Ashley Pandelides, Alexeis Kirnos, Molly Conway and Kristen Chick.

With it being alumni weekend, Radford also welcomed back a large group of alumni to Cupp Stadium. The team paid tribute to the 1998 Big South Championship program who is celebrating the 25th anniversary of that title win this year.

With most seniors in the starting lineup, Radford kept their offensive intensity that's been displayed throughout conference play. The Highlanders rallied to seven shots and five corners in the first half while Veras was solid in the net with four saves. The two squads would go into halftime still tied 0-0, but it was thematically a senior who would break the ice in the second half.

In the 63rd minute, freshman Caitlyn Nottingham found Swain in the box and despite fighting two defenders Swain was able to get a leg on the ball. The deflected shot would find its way to the back of the net and give Radford the 1-0 lead.

The 1-0 lead was all Radford would need for it's eighth straight home win this season, finishing perfect inside Cupp Stadium. 2023 marks the fourth-ever perfect season at Cupp and is the first since 2018. The Highlanders outscored opponents by a whopping 24-3 when at home and now has an unbeaten home streak up to 10 straight dating back to 2022.

"We are really happy to get the win on senior night," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "This group of seniors has really meant a lot to this program and has been successful in so many ways. It wasn't our cleanest game of the season, and we could've finished better. In the end we're happy with the win and looking forward to the conference tournament."

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Longwood traveled to Winthrop and won 2-1 despite a late goal by the Eagles to stay tied for the fourth and final playoff spot.
  • Charleston Southern hosted UNC Asheville and picked up a key 1-0 victory to remain tied for the fourth and final playoff spot.
  • USC Upstate didn't let up in a convincing 4-0 thumping of Presbyterian and sits just one point behind Radford in the standings for the #1 seed.

UP NEXT
Tonight's victory marks the end of the regular season as the team will take a week off to prepare for the Big South Tournament. The eight other Big South teams have one last match to play next Wednesday, so Radford will await their official seeding and remain in the running for a regular season championship.
