Women’s Soccer’s Defense Shines in Close Loss at Top-Seed Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Radford women's soccer program fought until the final minute falling 2-0 in an incredible performance against the top-seeded Clemson Tigers in the NCAA First Round Friday night.

The Big South Champions represented the conference well as the defense took on one of the most efficient offenses in the country and didn't falter. Freshman Lexi Radvanyi, also making her NCAA Tournament debut, looked like a seasoned veteran in the pouring rain. Radvanyi finished the night with nine saves, a new career high.

Early on the Highlanders did have a handful of opportunities to get their first-ever lead in the NCAA Tournament. After a pair of saves by Radvanyi, the offense flipped the field and put the Tigers on their heels. The Highlanders drew back-to-back corner kicks and came up just short in those opportunities despite two wonderful looks off the foot of Alexeis Kirnos.

As the first half ended, the Highlanders were right there with the Tigers locked in a 0-0 tie. The first half shutout was the first by the Highlanders in the NCAA Tournament since 2012 when the program shut out North Carolina in the first half.

The defense would continue to fight as the rain grew harsh until the 55th minute. Clemson took advantage of the slippery surface and the Tigers' top-scorer Makenna Morris broke the scoreless tie to make it 1-0. In the 77th minute, Clemson struck again to add to their lead, but it was all the Highlander defense would allow in the 2-0 final.

"We had a game plan, and the players did so well," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "We held a number one seed scoreless for around an hour of soccer. All our fans, families and alumni should be proud of the effort the Highlanders put out tonight. We never want to lose a game, but the program took a step forward. I want to thank our seniors and everything they have done for this program. What a great group of people and leaders."
