Women’s Basketball Falls in Finale at Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Radford women's basketball program fell in another tough game Friday afternoon 72-55 to Northern Illinois as the opposing Huskies used an impressive second half and 50% three-point shooting to pull away.

The first 20 minutes of Friday's contest featured a back and forth affair between the two squads. Northern Illinois wouldn't waste any time getting its three-point shooting off to a hot start for an early 11-6 lead. Pairs of makes by Ashlyn Traylor-Walker and Taniya Hanner kept the scoring close while a 5-0 run by Maci Rhoades made it just a 19-15 deficit after the first quarter.

The offense stayed hot going into the second quarter as Hanner scored four straight points and Olivia Wagner added a make for a 6-0 run by Radford to tie the game at 21-all with 7:21 left in the half. Hanner would tie the game at 23-all and Ashlyn gave Radford a lead with a free throw 24-23 with 2:53 left in the half.

The scoring would go cold for Radford after that, however, as Northern Illinois finished the half on a 5-0 run over the final two minutes to lead 28-24 at halftime. The scoring streak ran into the second half for the Huskies as the run grew to 11-0 before Ashlyn halted the run with an and-one opportunity.

Trailing 34-27 the Huskies were able to pull away from deep range. Northern Illinois averages over 30 three-point tries a game and used every bit of it today hitting 10 of 16 three-point tries in the second half alone. The lead would balloon to as much as 25 for Northern Illinois as Radford's shooting went cold at the wrong time.

In the final quarter of play Radford got to sub in some fresh legs and plenty of Highlanders benefited. Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker took full advantage of her opportunity in the fourth quarter scoring all 11 points in those final ten minutes for a career-high with Radford. Joi Williams added a pair of assists while Emma Fox pulled down a pair of rebounds and Kirby Brown also scored her first points since the season opener. Freshman Arshae Jackson also made her collegiate debut in the closing minutes.

NOTABLES
  • Pa'Shence's 11 points in the fourth quarter was the most in a single quarter by a Radford newcomer this season.
  • Terissa Lavoile-Brice continues her great pace on the boards pulling down seven today, a team-high. As a team Radford just narrowly lost the rebound battle despite the shooting struggles 33-32.
  • Radford did struggle at the free throw line in the first half but rebounded a big way over the final 20 minutes shooting 11-12 thanks in part to Pa'Shence's perfect 4-4 line at the charity stripe.

UP NEXT
Radford flips directions for their next pair of games. The Highlanders travel north for two more road games first with a visit to Penn State on Wednesday, November 29th. Radford will then close out the week with a visit to Niagara on Saturday, December 2nd.
