Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Niagara

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Radford women's basketball program's second half comeback attempt fell just short at Niagara Saturday afternoon 64-53 in a game that was within one possession in the final minutes.

The Highlanders came out the gates strong opening the game with a 5-0 run that forced a Purple Eagles timeout. Terissa Lavoile-Brice got the scoring started with three makes at the free throw line while Taniya Hanner got her big day started with a nifty layup. Coming out of the timeout Ashlyn Traylor-Walker would get her first points of the day but from then on it was all Niagara for the rest of the second half.

The Purple Eagles outscored the Highlanders 20-8 over the remaining eight minutes of the opening quarter. Hanner added four more points, but layups from Joi Williams and Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker were all the Highlanders scoring.

Pa'Shence began the second quarter right with her second straight make, but six unanswered points allowed Niagara's lead to grow to 26-17. Another 7-0 run allowed the lead to grow further, but Ashlyn stopped the bleeding with a make in the final minutes to keep the deficit at just 35-25 at halftime.

In the third quarter, tides changed quickly. Radford came out with a new energy and held the Purple Eagles to just six points over the 10 minutes to bring things to a tie for the final frame. Over eight minutes, Radford went on a 12-2 run as Hanner lit up for eight points to lead the charge.

After a three-pointer ended the long scoring drought with a minute left for Niagara, Radford went back to work at the free throw line with four makes from Hanner and Ellie Taylor to draw even 41-all going into the fourth quarter.

After briefly leading late in the third quarter, Radford gained another lead right away in the fourth as Taylor sunk a floater that put Radford up 43-41. Niagara bounced back with a make of their own, but Ashlyn was the responding punch all-quarter for Radford as she put the team back up 45-43.

After getting just one made basket between the seventh and eighth minutes of the quarter, Ashlyn hit back-to-back shots to tie the game once again at 51-all with 2:33 left in the game. Unfortunately, the energy ran out for Radford as Niagara would finish the game on a 13-2 run almost entirely fueled by free throws to seal the 64-53 final.

NOTABLES
  • Hanner's 16 points tied a career-high for the graduate as she shot 55% from the floor and was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line.
  • Radford did not score a three-pointer in today's contest marking the first time Radford has been held scoreless from deep since March 2016.
  • Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker and Ashlyn Traylor-Walker became the first pair of sisters to start for Radford dating back to when records of such stat began in 2000.
  • Radford's offense  worked entirely through the paint today as 13 of their points came from the free throw line while the remaining 40 points came within the paint.
