Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Start Not Enough in Loss at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Radford women's basketball program posted a strong second quarter after a rough start Sunday afternoon before ultimately falling 80-53 to Vanderbilt.

The Highlanders got off to a decent start in the match despite 12 first quarter turnovers. After Vanderbilt gained a 6-2 lead, Radford responded with a made shot from Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker and a three-pointer by Joi Williams to claim a 7-6 lead at the 5:58 mark.

Vanderbilt would go on a 16-0 run from there, though, only broken up by a pair of free throws by Terissa Lavoile-Brice and a layup by Taniya Hanner. Radford trailed 14-28 after the first quarter but didn't back down. Williams stayed hot with five more points in the start of the second and the team turned the ball over just two times overall in the quarter.

By the end of the second quarter, Radford had outscored Vanderbilt 18-17. Bria Beverly added five points, tying a career-high, and Ashlyn Traylor-Walker came alive for seven points including six of the final seven points of the half.

Trailing just 32-45, Radford was down but not out. Coming out of the locker room at halftime it was the Commodores who took command as they opened the half on an 8-0 run and kept Radford scoreless in the first four minutes.

Vanderbilt outscored Radford 22-7 in the third quarter shooting 77% in those 10 minutes to fully pull away. Ashlyn would add another eight points in the final quarter to eclipse her season average and finish with 18 points, but it wouldn't be enough as the team lost 80-53.
