Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jeffers Drops 16 Points In Defeat to Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford men's basketball team got its offense back on track, but just couldn't generate enough points to keep up with Longwood in a 73-63 defeat inside Willett Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers (19-10, 11-5 Big South) wasted no time building a lead in front of a sold out home crowd, making it an 8-2 game before the first media timeout. The Highlanders (17-12, 11-5 Big South) responded, but it turned out it was just the beginning of a pattern where Longwood had an answer to every Radford comeback effort all game.

The hosts took a 36-30 lead into halftime and then began the second frame with a 7-0 run that gave them complete control. Longwood's lead grew to as many as 17 with 9:22 left on the clock.

A three-pointer from freshman guard Kenyon Giles and then another from graduate guard Onyebuchi Ezeakudo ignited a 10-0 by the Highlanders to pull within seven with six minutes to go, but the Lancers replied with a run of their own and coasted to the finish.

Josiah Jeffers led Radford with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, his highest output since dropping 18 points against N.C. Central back in December. DaQuan Smith added 11 points and a team-high three assists, giving him 23 double-figure scoring performances in 29 games this year.

Shaquan Jules filled up the statsheet with seven points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist, going 3-for-3 from the floor to help Radford shoot 51.0% as a team.

Isaiah Wilkins paced the Lancers with 16 points while three of his teammates reached double figure territory as well.

KEY STATS
  • While the Highlanders eclipsed 50.0% from the floor, they shot just 35.3% on three-pointers compared to 47.4% by Longwood
  • Radford won the rebounding battle, 30-26
  • Longwood's stout defense forced 16 Highlander turnovers. The Lancers coughed the ball up just eight times
