Softball Falls in Pair of Tight Games

STATESBORO, GA. –The Radford softball program had a pair of tight games in the second day of the Bash in the Boro, falling in both 4-3 to Georgia Southern and Long Island. The Highlanders were resilient facing a tall task in a 13-inning game against Georgia Southern and having to immediately turn around to play Long Island.

Game 1
The Highlanders first game of the day featured the incredible debut of freshmen Malorie Reeves who almost went the entire 13 innings for Radford. Georgia Southern would touch up Reeves for two runs in the second inning, but that's all the Eagles would get for another 11 innings of play.

The Highlanders had multiple opportunities throughout the game but through six innings were scoreless and looking for answer. Down to their final out, Laura Thompson stepped up again for the big hit. The graduate transfer from Concord lace a single up the middle that scored Taylor Trent and Kyndall Stanley and tied the game at two-all.

Radford wouldn't get the elusive third run to gain a lead and so the two teams were locked in a stalemate in a race to the finish that resembled a marathon. Radford has not played in more than 10 innings since a game back in 2021 at Charleston Southern. Reeves stood tall to the task and kept the Eagles scoreless.

In the 13th inning both squads would begin the inning with a runner placed on second base. Radford took advantage as Abby Wilson sacrifice bunted McMillan to third and Emily Smith doubled her in to score and make it 3-2 Radford. Georgia Southern responded, and would get a pair of runs to lock up the 4-3 final.

Game 2
Radford and Long Island faced off in the second game of the day, the first rematch of the weekend for the Highlanders. Radford would fall 4-3 in the game, but it would not take 13 innings to reach that result this time.

The Highlanders were strong out the gates, immediately plating a trio of runs. Lexie Roberts got things started with a single and McMillan followed her with a double to immediately put Radford in scoring position. Emily Smith walked to load the bases and Kari Shedrick broke the ice with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at one-all. Foster Sharpe had the big swing of the inning as she dialed up a two-out single through the right side that scored both Smith and McMillan.

Leading 3-1, freshman Chloe Greene took the circle with a lead and forced a scoreless second inning. Long Island would strike back in the third inning, however, plating two runs to tie the game at three-all.

Radford would pick up hits here and there but was never able to replicate that early inning rally. Emily Spingarn took over in the sixth inning in relief for her first appearance of the season and was lights out not allowing a single Sharks baserunner in two innings of work. Long Island would hold on to win, however, 4-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford saw some incredible success from its freshman pitching duo today. Reeves totaled 12.1 IP today in a single game allowing just three earned runs and striking out a team-high seven batters. Facing Long Island for the second time this weekend, Greene posted a solid five innings of work striking out three Sharks.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will close out the Bash in the Boro early tomorrow morning with just over 12 hours of turnaround between their last game tonight and first game tomorrow. Radford and Bryant are currently set to rematch with a projected 9 a.m. first pitch on Sunday.
