BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford University women's track and field team concluded its regular season with a slew of outstanding efforts at the Virginia Tech Challenge this weekend. The squad combined for five podium finishes, nine personal records and three all-time performances.
Raichelle Cornelius now sits at seventh in the program's record book in both the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash after posting times of 25.60 seconds and 57.69 seconds. She took home third place in both events.
Julia Burkley also recorded personal-best times in the same events; she crossed the line in 26.00 seconds in the 200-meter dash and finished with a time of 59.34 seconds in the 400-meter dash to place fifth in both races.
Jordan Jackson scored in the 400-meter dash as well after finishing sixth with a career-best time of 59.69 seconds.
In the mile,
Sophie Magson moved to third all-time after a lifetime-best mark of 5:01.26.
MegAnne Gilmore ran a season best time of 5:07.73 to place sixth and
Kate McLearen was just behind her with a 5:11.84 effort to give her the seventh finishing position.
The freshman duo of
Jaslyne Robinson and
Kandace McIvor continued to excel in the 60-meter hurdles as they have all season. Robinson finished fifth and McIvor placed eighth with times of 9.05 seconds and 9.41 seconds, respectively.
Breauna Lane rounded out the podium in the 60-meter dash. In what was her first time ever competing in that event, the senior finished with a time of 7.97 seconds.
MacKenzie Gardner and Kaitlyn Lafon both grabbed a top-six spot in the 800-meter race. Gardner's time of 2:20.96 was good enough for fourth place. Lafon finished sixth with a personal record of 2:24.53.
Rachel Millirons paced the Highlanders in the 3,000-meter event. She finished fourth after posting a time of 10:23.05, her best outing this season.
Abby Seigel rounded out the top five with a time of 10:43.56 and
Natalie Preston was close behind her after a career-best time of 10:56.14.
Radford found success in a handful of field events as well, highlighted by a pair of podium finishes from long jumpers
Elyssia Fisher and
Dezmajia Carter. Fisher earned silver with a mark of 5.41 meters and Carter finished third with her best jump of 5.34 meters.
Mya Rosser registered a personal record in the weight throw, posting a distance of 11.56 meters.
Jaylen Rosser finished right behind her with a mark of 10.71 meters. The pair of sisters both earned top-ten finishing positions.
QUOTABLE
Head coach
Shelli Sayers knew how important this weekend was and could not have asked for much more from her team. "This team was simply excellent this weekend. I am so proud of everyone."
"People stepped out of their comfort zones and took chances and it paid off. We have so much momentum heading into next week," she added.
UP NEXT
The Highlanders will head back across town to Rector Field House next weekend to compete in the Big South Conference Championships.
