Softball Splits Games in First Day of ECU Pirate Clash

GREENVILLE, N.C. –The Radford softball program split their games in the opening day of the ECU Pirate Clash Friday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Bucknell and a tight loss over the hosts East Carolina.

Game 1
The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel between Radford and Bucknell where neither side was ever able to lead by more than a run. Chloe Greene got the start for Radford, and the young freshman continues to impress. Greene retired the first six batters straight which allowed Radford to grab its first lead of the day.

Cori McMillan drew a walk and proceeded to steal second to start the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Kari Shedrick carried her hot hitting from Tuesday to this weekend and doubled to left center to score McMillan and make it 1-0 Radford.

Greene would allow the first hit of the day in the third, but again held Bucknell scoreless. The bottom of third started great for the Highlanders as Rachel Smith doubled, Laura Thompson walked and Lexie Roberts singled to second to load the bases with none out. Bucknell would get three straight outs, however, to keep it a 1-0 game.

With momentum swinging Bucknell's way, the Bison took advantage. With two outs the Bisons rallied for a pair of hits that tied the game at one-all. After a quiet bottom of the fourth for Radford, Bucknell struck again in the top of the fifth to lead 2-1. A critical play by Emily Smith in right field, gunning the runner down at home plate for the third out, would be huge in hindsight keeping it just a 2-1 deficit.

In the bottom of the fifth Radford got all the run production it would need for the rest of the day. Cassi Barbato led things off with a single and Rachel Smith clobbered a home run to center that put Radford back out front 3-2. Skyler DeHart would take over the pitching duties from then on, tossing two scoreless frames to guide Radford to the 3-2 victory.

Game 2
Radford took on the tournament hosts in the second game of the day in a close game that ended up slipping away late. Malorie Reeves got the starting nod dialing up a scoreless first inning. Similar to their first game, Radford struck offensively in the second inning.

Roberts led things off with a double and Emily Smith promptly doubled her in for the early 1-0 lead. Taylor Trent picked up her first career hit and first career RBI all in one swing with a single to left field that scored Emily Smith.

East Carolina would strike for four runs in the bottom of the second as Radford would face a 4-2 deficit for most of the game. Reeves would rebound for two scoreless innings to keep Radford close up to the fifth inning.

Laura Thompson led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second thanks to a bunt by Foster Sharpe. Kari Shedrick singled, but a just-missed catch would keep Thompson at second. With two outs, Barbato came up huge with the two-out RBI to right that scored Thompson.

The comeback attempt would come up just short for Radford, as East Carolina struck for four more runs across the fifth and sixth innings to pull away in the game and eventually win 8-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The freshman pitching for Radford today was excellent. Greene earned her first career win with five solid innings of work in game one and Reeves looked good against a potent East Carolina offense in game two holding the hosts to five runs in five innings.

The freshman Trent also had a break-out performance in game two with two hits and her first career RBI. Rachel Smith was electric in game one with her two hits, most notably the homer to center field which was her first of the season. Shedrick and Sharpe also remain hot as the duo both have hits in three of the last four games.

UP NEXT
Hoping to avoid the rain, the Highlanders have two more games scheduled for the Pirate Clash tomorrow. Radford kicks things off at 10 a.m. against the reigning NEC champions Saint Francis (PA). The team will then rematch Bucknell in the next game at 12:30 p.m..
