Women’s Basketball Powers Past Camels in Regular Season Finale

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball program powered past a stout Campbell squad Saturday afternoon 66-61 for a big road victory over the Camels. Radford went 12-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold on in enemy territory.

The first quarter of Saturday's contest was a back-and-forth affair between the two historic Big South squads. Radford and Campbell, who have been Big South members for over 30 years together, faced off for the last time as conference foes in the regular season today as Campbell is currently set to join the Colonial next year.

A jumper by Rachel LaLonde got the scoring started for Radford and a three-pointer a couple minutes later had Radford down just 8-5 as the team tried to weather a hot start from beyond the arc by Campbell. The Camels got a trio of three-pointers over the first four minutes to lead 11-7 at the first media timeout.

Radford would hang around for most of the second quarter, but the squad fully took control to outscore Campbell by 14 points in the second quarter. Trailing 18-14, Vanessa Blake opened the scoring with a layup and Ashley Panem sunk a three-pointer to give Radford the slim 19-18 lead. Another pair of makes by Blake kept the pace for Radford to lead 24-21.

LaLonde would come alive once again for Radford scoring four of the next six points for the Highlanders to lead 30-22. After a pair of made free throws by Olivia Wagner, Radford led 34-24 at the halftime break which was a good omen for the Highlanders who came into the game with an 11-2 record when leading after the first half.

Up 34-24, Radford kept the hot shooting up with back-to-back and-ones by Traylor which kicked off her incredible second half. A three-pointer by Carmen Williams put Radford up 43-33 with five minutes left in the third as the offense continued to fire from multiple angles. Tatiana Beaumont would add another three-pointer while Jackie Christ joined in on the scoring fun to put Radford up 52-45 at the end of the third quarter.

That set up an interesting fourth quarter for Radford. The great Campbell defense kicked it into high gear over the final 10 minutes as Radford was only able to manage one made shot from the floor. To hold on for the eventual 66-61 win, Radford used an incredible 12-for-14 performance from the free throw line.

Blake, Traylor, LaLonde and Wagner combined for the 12 free throw makes with Wagner owning the lone shot. Combining that with a strong defensive effort that didn't allow any made shots from the floor over the final 2:49, Radford picked up a win over Campbell for the second time this season to sweep the season series.

TRAYLOR LEADS THE FREE THROW EFFORT
A key in today's victory was the Highlanders ability to take advantage of Campbell's foul trouble. Radford went to the line 31 times today and got 23 points out of it. Traylor played a huge role, shooting 11-12 from the charity stripe today which is by-far a new career-high and it's a single game team-high for the 2022-23 season. The freshman phenom continues to find new ways to impress with her 19 points, five assists and four steals.

FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES
To combat the stout Campbell defense today, four Highlanders stepped up big-time with double digit point totals to lead the team to the win. Traylor led all scorers in the game with 19 points while Blake, Williams and LaLonde each finished with 11+ points. It's the fifth time this season the team has had four different players in double figures scoring and the first since four players scored 10+ against Charleston Southern just a couple weeks ago.

GETTING HOT AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME
The Highlanders needed a big response this week against two of the top four teams in the Big South, and did just that. After wins over High Point and Campbell, Radford finishes tied for fourth in the Big South standings with Presbyterian and on a two-game winning streak. Thanks to Radford owning the tiebreaker, the team will own the fourth seed in the upcoming Big South Tournament.

Radford is set to begin its tournament run next week on Thursday, March 2nd at 2 p.m. with action being streamed on ESPN+ for the quarterfinals and semifinals. The official Big South bracket with pairings will be released after the completion of today's games.
