Shade Earns First Win at Radford as Highlanders Dispatch Spartans

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Radford men's tennis program picked up their first win of the season 5-2 over UNC Greensboro Tuesday afternoon. It also marked the first victory for first-year head coach J.D. Shade.
Radford began the match by taking a tight doubles point on the top two courts. Guilherme Severin and Aditya Balsekar wasted no time defeating their opponents 6-2 on court two. UNC Greensboro was able to even the score with a tiebreaker victory on court three before Demis Taramonlis and Konstantinos Raptis secured a 7-6(2) win on the top flight for the 1-0 advantage.
In singles play the Highlanders continued to excel by winning four more courts. Taramonlis stayed hot on the top flight with a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory. Balsekar picked up his first career win on the second flight with ease 6-2, 6-4. Severin also was victorious on court four in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Raptis would round out the victorious Highlanders as he was up in the second set attempting a comeback before his opponent had to retire due to injury. Robert Hagen had won his first set after being bumped up to court five 7-6(3), but had to retire in the second set due to injury.
The Highlanders will have a week off before traveling to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in the HEB tournament between February 17th and 18th. Opponents and times for those matches are to be determind.
