RADFORD, Va. — Despite taking a combined no-hitter into the seventh inning, the Radford baseball team was unable to hold on to a late lead, falling to Rider 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.

The Highlanders (7-10) got impressive outings from a plethora of arms, starting with RHP Clay Clatterbaugh, who tossed three scoreless innings in his first career start. Lefty Carter Seabrooke followed that up with three solid frames of his own, allowing just one run.

On the offensive side, Radford got the scoring started in the third inning when second baseman Sully Tibbs hit a two-out double. He was then driven in by center fielder Zack Whitcare on a single to center field, part of a two-hit day for the senior.

In the fifth inning, Radford brought the power. On a 3-2 count with nobody out, designated hitter Austin Stalker launched a solo shot to right field for his first career long-ball. In the ensuing at-bat, right fielder Paul Moore also sent a homer over the right field wall, as the Highlanders went back-to-back for the first time this season.

For the day, Moore was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

However, Rider (11-5) mustered a late rally. The Broncs collected their first hit in the seventh inning, a two-RBI double by Erich Hartmann. The visitors added two more runs in the eighth to take the lead.

Clayton Poliey was the winning pitcher for Rider, while Danny Kirwin earned the save. RHP Zack Mallia tossed a scoreless ninth inning in a losing effort for the Highlanders.

KEY STATS

The five hits allowed by Radford as a staff tied for the fewest in a game this season.
First baseman Tanner Barrs was on base three times, posting a hit and two walks.
Contact was aplenty in this game, as the two teams combined for only four strikeouts.

UP NEXT
Radford will have Thursday off before gearing up for a road non-conference series at Western Carolina. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.
