RADFORD, Va. – After a pair of road games last week, the Radford University women's lacrosse team returned home and pieced together their best outing of the season in a 17-7 Senior Day win over Winthrop University on Saturday afternoon. The senior group of Margaret Gleason, Reaghan Kolb, Olivia Cox, Ilana Tall, Libby Rehkemper and Bella Signorello were recognized before the start of the contest. Fueled by a career day from Gleason and three different seniors on the scoresheet, the Highlanders went on to dominate the game by scoring the most goals they have all season.
The Eagles landed the first blow of the game less than three minutes in but it was Radford that responded immediately and never looked back. Down 1-0, the Highlanders reeled off four consecutive goals. Gleason tallied her first two goals within one minute of each other. Linley Tirrell then fired home a feed from Ashlyn Grogan and Erica Lawrence scored her lone goal of the day to put the hosts up three. Grogan's second assist of the day went to Mady Cheney as the freshman closed out the first-period scoring.
It was Winthrop who scored first in the second but the Highlanders answered back this time with seven of the next goals. A trio of goals from Gleason within a six-minute span gave the Brentwood, Tenn. native five goals at the midway point of the second quarter.
Tall found the back of the net for the first time this season to put the Highlanders up by six. Her goal was sandwiched by a pair of goals from Cheney and Tirrell, both players' second goal of the afternoon. After racking up three assists, Grogan scored Radford's final goal of the opening half to give the Highlanders a seven-goal advantage at the intermission.
Gleason continued her scoring efforts following the halftime break. She recorded her sixth goal of the game midway through the third frame. Cheney completed her second hat trick of the season just two minutes later when she slotted home a feed from Tall.
Winthrop registered a pair of goals to close out the third quarter, but it was Radford that scored all three goals in the fourth in dramatic fashion. Cox celebrated Senior Day with her first goal of the year when she scored with a just over five minutes remaining in the match. Tirrell then added her third of the day to make it a trio of Highlander hat tricks. With 15 seconds remaining, Gleason added one more goal to finish the game with a career-best seven goals.
Gleason's historic day paced the squad as she led all scorers with seven goals. Cheney and Tirrell both recorded hat tricks as well while the quarter of Lawrence, Tall, Grogan and Cox all added one score apiece. Olivia Hunter remained busy between the pipes; the junior goalkeeper added 14 saves.
