Radford Splits Doubleheader with Charleston Southern

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program collected their first Big South win Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader split that saw a strong pitching and hitting performance in a 6-0 win in game one, and a close 4-1 loss in the second game.

Game 1
The Highlanders got the day started right with a dominant performance in game one. Chloe Greene got the starting nod for the Highlanders and kept the Buccaneers at bay all afternoon. After a scoreless first by Greene, Radford wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning.

After Laura Thompson drew a walk, Kari Shedrick kept her hot streak going with a monster opposite-field home run that gave Radford a 2-0 lead. It was Shedrick's second home run of the season and second in as many games. After a quiet top of the second by Charleston Southern, Emily Smith joined in with her second home run of the weekend that made it 3-0 Radford.

After a few runners got into scoring position with no avail for Charleston Southern in the first two innings, the visitors had their first big scoring opportunity in the third. Back-to-back singles opened the inning and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with one out. After a walk loaded the bases, Greene settled in. The freshman forced two straight flyouts to escape the threat and keep things scoreless.

After Charleston Southern doubled to start the fourth inning, Greene again was lights-out to keep Charleston Southern scoreless with a pair of strikeouts. Radford would load the bases with none out in the bottom of the fourth, but some skillful defense kept the game at a 3-0 score.

The fifth inning featured Greene's first three-up three-down frame and she carried that into the sixth inning to make it eight straight retired. The Highlanders' offense would reward that effort by Greene in the bottom of the sixth.

Radford would do all its work with two outs in the sixth. Abby Wilson got things started with a walk and a single by Lexie Roberts had Radford in business. Emily Smith stroked a triple to right center for her second and third RBIs of the day to put Radford up 5-0. Cassi Barbato capped off the two-out rally with a single up the middle that scored Smith and gave Radford the 6-0 lead.

The insurance in the sixth inning was more than enough for Greene who went out in the seventh to finish of her ace performance. After a lead off walk, Greene retired the next three batters for her first shutout with the Highlanders.

Game 2
Radford kept their momentum going early into the second game of the day as the Highlanders were quick to strike in the first inning. McMillan and Laura Thompson led off the inning with singles and Shedrick moved them one base further to put two in scoring position. Rachel Smith grounded out, but got the job done bringing in McMillan for the 1-0 lead.

A costly error in the second inning allowed Charleston Southern to take a 2-1 lead in the second inning, however, a lead they would never let up. Outside of the rough inning, freshman starter Natalie Jones put in some solid work once again for the Highlanders as that was the only two runs she allowed. The seven strikeouts today against the Buccaneers were also a career-high.

After a two-run home run by the visitors in the sixth inning, Radford tried to rally in the final frame. Lexie Roberts and E. Smith both singled to start the inning, but a double play ended the threat en route to the 4-1 final.
