Close Games Slip Away in Doubleheader at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. –The Radford softball program fell in two tight games Sunday afternoon at Campbell despite early leads. Radford fell 3-1 in game one despite a great pitching performance by Malorie Reeves and then fell victim to a late comeback 4-3 in game two.

Game 1
The Highlanders struck early in both games of the day starting with a first inning lead in game one. Laura Thompson began her two-hit game with a single to right and a sacrifice bunt by Cori McMillan moved her to second. Abby Wilson drew a walk and Rachel Smith added another hit to load the bases with one out. Radford took advantage of a Camels error to score the lone run of the inning.

Malorie Reeves got the starting nod in the first game of the day and was spectacular for the Highlanders throughout. After a lead off single in the first, Reeves worked through trouble and induced a double play that McMillan neatly turned at third base for the scoreless first.

After Thompson collected a second hit in the top of the second, Campbell would strike for two runs in the bottom half. After an error started the inning, Campbell took advantage of it and put up two unearned runs on Reeves who did well to navigate out of trouble and stop the bleeding.

Campbell would get their only earned run of the day in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Radford would look to rally in the sixth after Lexie Roberts and Natalie Moya both singled with one out. Two outs ended that threat, however, and the Camels eventually held on to win 3-1.

Game 2
Radford's offense got off to a quick start in the early goings once again for game two to help the team maintain a lead throughout most of the game. Natalie Jones would toss a flawless first inning for the Highlanders, setting up the offense for inning two.

McMillan led the inning off with a triple and Smith wasted no time scoring her with a single through the left side to make it a 1-0 lead. After Smith stole second, Qween Edmonds hit another triple to score her and make it a 2-0 lead.

Jones would go back to work in the following innings not allowing any threats by Campbell. Through four innings, Jones had only allowed a handful of Camels to even reach base.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Radford added another big run thanks to McMillan. Wilson drew a two-out walk and McMillan singled which brought Wilson all the way home for the 3-0 advantage by Radford. Campbell would scratch across a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it was no damage done as the team held on to the lead 3-1.

After a scoreless top of the sixth, the Camels continued to chip away until they were able to bring about a tie. Three straight hits made it a 3-3 game forcing Radford to make a pitching change to Ellen Palya with none out and a runner on second. Palya collected three outs stranding two runners in scoring position, accentuating the inning with a strikeout.

After a scoreless top of the seventh the Camels got two timely hits in the bottom half of the inning to walk-off the game and complete their comeback.
