BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford University women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a blistering second half from conference foe Gardner-Webb as the Highlanders fell by a final score of 15-11 on Wednesday evening. In a game that saw five ties and four lead changes, the Runnin' Bulldogs outscored Radford by eight in the second half to claim the victory.
After scoring five goals in the entirety of Saturday's game against Presbyterian, the Highlanders responded furiously with five goals in the just first quarter of tonight. The first three goals of the contest went Radford's way as the trio of Erica Lawrence, Linley Tirrell and Reece Morrish all scored.
The two squads then traded goals for the remainder of the opening frame. Tirrell added a pair of goals late in the quarter to complete her first-quarter hat trick and give the visitors a 5-2 lead after the first period.
Margaret Gleason opened the scoring in the second quarter when she found the back of the net to match Radford's largest lead of the game. After the hosts responded with a score of their own, Tirrell scored her fourth goal of the contest to put the Highlanders up four goals at the break.
Gardner-Webb opened the second half by scoring five consecutive goals en route to their first lead of the day. Tirrell then tallied her fifth goal of the day square things up at eight apiece.
Radford regained the lead at 9-8 via Gleason's second score of the day. The Runnin' Bulldogs leveled things again before Ashlyn Grogan's lone goal of the game put the Highlanders back on top.
The hosts then scored a pair of goals to reclaim the lead before Gleason scored her third goal of the day to tie the game at 11-11 and complete her sixth hat trick of the season. The Highlanders' scoring efforts stopped there, however, as Gardner-Webb netted the final four goals of the contest.
Tirrell led all scorers with five goals. Gleason contributed with three goals; the senior scored her fourth hat trick in the last five games. Grogan added a goal and poured in three assists. Olivia Hunter posted her eighth double-digit save performance of the campaign as she tallied 14 saves in the game.
