Women’s Basketball’s Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's basketball program used a spirited second half comeback after trailing by almost 20 in Wednesday's contest at Charleston Southern before ultimately falling 58-73.

The Highlanders were led in the meeting by a 22-point performance from Ashlyn Traylor-Walker who came off the bench and provided multiple much-needed offensive sparks. After trailing by as much as 52-34, the Highlanders stormed back to make it a four-point game late before the ultimate final.

The Buccaneers opened the contest on a shooting tear at 53% in the first quarter to build their initial 19-12 lead. After being tied at six-all, Charleston Southern went on a 9-0 run to gain a lead that would never give. Ellie Taylor hit a layup and Ashlyn followed with a jumper and two free throws to keep things close after a quarter.

After an initial strong start to the second for Radford that saw a 9-4 run with more makes from Ashlyn and a three from Olivia Wagner, the deficit was just 23-21 with 5:12 left in the half. From there, however, the Buccaneers offense caught fire with a trio of three pointers and a 16-2 run to end the first half with a 39-23 lead.

Five minutes into the third quarter, the struggles continued for Radford as Charleston Southern built its biggest lead of the day at 52-34 with 4:55 left in the third quarter. Not backing down, Radford regrouped to try and fight back against the adversities faced.

Ashlyn and Taylor got a big run started with back-to-back layups and Joi Williams accented the start of the run with an and-one that made it a 52-41 deficit. Taniya Hanner followed with an and-one that made it a 10-0 Radford run and brought the deficit down to single digits. Williams and Ashlyn would hit two more shots that made it just a 54-48 game headed into the final quarter.

Offense was hard to come by at the start of the quarter, but another pair of free throws by Ashlyn made it a 54-50 game. That was as close as Radford would get in the contest, however, as the team wasn't able to string together one more scoring run to try and complete the comeback attempt. Radford showed heart down the stretch, but Charleston Southern outlasted them in the 52-34 final.
