Highlanders Split Points in Standings With UNC Asheville after 0-0 Draw

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's soccer program posted a strong defensive performance Saturday afternoon leading to a 0-0 draw against UNC Asheville at Tom Lillard Field at Cupp Stadium.

KEY STATS

  • There was a total of 27 total shots from both sides in tonight's scoreless game with Radford accounting for 12 of them.

  • Alex Eydelman had double the saves in comparison to UNC Asheville's keeper with Eydelman recording six.

  • The Highlanders accumulated four corners and were just two shy of their season high.

PLAY BY PLAY

Since the start of the first half Radford and UNC Asheville were locked in a very physical defensive game. Each side was able to carve out a few chances at goal with some of those opportunities looking for what could've been the deciding goal on either side. The best chance from Radford came within the first 20 minutes when Radford's leading goal scorer Joep de Bruin sent one that was just a few inches too far left at the 16th minute. A good defensive presence and some great saves by both sides would lock this one at a 0-0 draw heading into the half.

In the second half, the defensive battle would reign on as neither side would budge for the attackers to once again find the potential decider. The Highlanders would triple their chances from the first half with the best opportunity coming from a two-minute frame where Akos Tajtyi would just hit right at the right woodwork at the 81st minute mark and de Bruin hitting the left woodwork in the 83rd minute. The Highlanders would continue to fight but would find themselves splitting the points after the final whistle would cement the 0-0 draw.

HEAD COACH BARRETT QUOTABLE
"This was yet another game where we played really well for portions of the game and gave ourselves a chance to win at the end. I continue to be impressed with how hard our guys keep playing for each other no matter the circumstances. We hit the post twice in the last few minutes to win the game and made some big defensive plays to keep a clean sheet. We are still in the mix to get into our conference tournament so I know our guys will continue to work hard in training to get ready for Winthrop next Saturday." - Chris Barrett
