Women’s Basketball’s Comeback Effort Falls Just Short in Overtime at The Greenbrier

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – The Radford women's basketball program used an incredible third quarter performance and held on to force overtime before eventually falling in their comeback effort against Navy 78-73 Sunday afternoon at The Greenbrier.

KEY STATS
  • Joi Williams secured a career-best performance with 19 points thanks to four three-pointers, the most in a single game by a Highlander so far this season.
  • After a few huge makes in overtime, Taylor Napper also eclipsed 10 points.
  • Makayla Firebaugh hit her first five shot attempts of the contest, finishing with 15 points.
  • Radford shot 44% overall as a team, but just 54% from the free throw line.
  • The Highlanders also outscored the Midshipmen in the paint 32-16.

PLAY BY PLAY
To kick off the Highlanders' strong shooting day, three different Highlanders all made shots in Adriana Shipp-Davis, Williams and Firebaugh to give Radford an early 6-5 edge. After a pair of three's by Williams and Shipp-Davis, Navy called a timeout to try and halt the run.

Out of the timeout, Navy went on an 8-0 run to briefly retake the lead before a layup by Firebaugh put Radford back up 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. Three more Highlanders joined in on the scoring fun in the second quarter including Reniya Jones, Anna Stromberg and Firebaugh to continue pacing ahead.

Up 21-18, Radford would get four straight points from Napper with a layup and some free throws. A trio of three-pointers from Navy right before the end of the half would give the Midshipmen the edge, however, going up 39-32 at halftime.

Out of the halftime locker room, Radford did not back down and went on their longest scoring run of the day. Thanks to dominating on the fastbreak, Radford got five points from Williams as she continued to stay hot. Kirah Dandridge got her first points of the day and Napper also sunk a layup to make it a 10-0 Radford run to lead 42-39.

Over the final five minutes of the third quarter, Navy would find their shooting to outscore Radford 6-3. It was the Highlanders who would lead 46-45 by the end of the third quarter, however, erasing their halftime deficit.

Navy would continue their hot shooting into the fourth quarter with some more three-pointers and free throw shooting to take back the lead. Down 57-51 with just three minutes left in the game, Radford looked for an answer and got it from Williams who nailed a three and a layup to make it a one-point game.

After a few free throws made it a three-point game in Navy's favor, it was Dandridge who had the huge three-pointer to tie the game with under 30 seconds to go. After a strong defensive possession, Radford had a shot at the game-winner. Sent to the line for two free throws, neither would land sending the game to overtime.

Navy opened overtime with a pair of three-pointers as the two teams continued to trade blows. Dandridge and Napper combined for six points to tie the game again at 65-65. Some fouls would go the Midshipmen's way allowing them to rack up the points at the free throw line to pull back ahead. Radford would get some big shots down the stretch from Williams once again, but Navy held on for the 78-73 final.
