Former Radford Baseball Standout Finds New Home with Pittsburgh Pirates

RADFORD, Va. – There's not too many people in the country who have had a busier past 24 hours than former Radford baseball first baseman Spencer Horwitz.

Horwitz, who was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 24th round (717th overall) in the 2019 MLB Draft after spending three seasons with Radford from 2017-2019, was traded first to the Cleveland Guardians late Tuesday night before finding his new home with the Pittsburgh Pirates as officially announced by the teams on Wednesday morning.

Horwitz is coming off a season with the Toronto Blue Jays where he batted .265, along with 12 HR and 40 RBI. He was also named to the MLB Pipeline's All-Rookie Second Team this past year.

Spencer will be much closer to his hometown of Timonium, MD. (only 253 miles from PNC Park) after landing with Pittsburgh, and joins a young, fruitful situation with 2024 NL Rookie of the Year pitcher Paul Skenes leading the charge.

Horwitz was the most recent Highlanders MLB draft pick, up until RHP Dylan Howard was selected in the eighth round by the Houston Astros this past June.
