Women’s Basketball Pushes Overtime, Ultimately Falls at Loyola MD

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Radford women's basketball program went to overtime for the second time this season in a competitive game at Loyola (MD), falling just short 70-64 despite heroics from Cate Carlson and Angelina Nice.

KEY STATS
  • Radford outshot Loyola (MD) in every quarter except for the fourth.
  • The Greyhounds scored 25 of their 70 points from the free throw line, earning 39 trips to Radford's 12.
  • Cate Carlson is the second Highlander this season to eclipse 20 points, setting a new career high.
  • Angelina Nice had a career day off the bench scoring nine points off two three-pointers and picking up a pair of crucial steals late.
  • Joi Williams either scored or assisted 40% of Radford's points on the day.

PLAY BY PLAY
Playing in their third game this season with a tip prior to noon, the Highlanders had to knock some rust off in the opening minutes. Taylor Napper had the first points of the game, but the Greyhounds immediately responded with an 8-0 run to give themselves a lead that would hold until the second half.

Looking for offensive answers going into the second quarter, Radford got them from Williams who came alive. After being held scoreless through the first 10 minutes, Williams caught fire for 10 points to help claw the Highlanders back into the game. A late make by Anna Stromberg would help Radford hold the deficit to just 24-20 at halftime.

A 7-2 run by the Greyhounds out of the break gave the hosts a commanding lead. Forcing a Radford timeout, it was Carlson who would single-handedly pull Radford ahead. Carlson commanded a 13-2 run with a pair of three pointers that gave Radford its first lead of the day at 41-36.

Not stopping there, Nice also caught fire off the bench for six quick points before the third quarter ended to give Radford the 49-40 edge with 10 minutes to go. The Greyhounds mounted a comeback of their own, however, beginning the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run to tighten the game at 52-48.

The Highlanders offense wouldn't get a shot from the floor until the closing seconds, but Loyola (MD) also went quiet from the floor. The Greyhounds would mount their comeback from the free throw line, scoring eight of their last 10 points from the charity stripe. Down 58-55 with just seconds remaining, it was Carlson who hit the clutch three for the Highlanders to force overtime at 58-all.

Both teams shooting woes continued into overtime as the game continued to be played at the free throw line. It was Loyola (MD) who would pull the game out, scoring the last five points off free throws to hand Radford the 70-64 loss.
