ATLANTA, Ga. - The Radford baseball program was unable to overcome early struggles which led to a 7-3 loss against Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Highlanders found themselves down early against the Yellow Jackets as the opponents were able to grab an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Dylan Howard would respond with a strong second inning as he was able to retire two batters and strikeout another to keep Georgia Tech scoreless in a clean second inning.
In the third the Highlanders answered back with a run as Brady Whitacre walked to first and advanced to second after a ground out by Hunter Keen. Conner Butler was able to bring him home as he doubled one down the left field line for Brady to score his first run as a Highlander.
However, Georgia Tech quickly responded as they were to secure a run in the third and another in the fourth to push the score to 5-1.
Things turned into a pitcher's duel through the fifth and sixth innings as neither team was able to score a run. Nick Petit shined in the two innings as he only faced six batters and knocked down all six straight, recording two strikeouts in the process.
In the seventh the Highlanders would inch closer to Georgia Tech as Corbin Grantham scored his second run of the season after a throwing error opened the opportunity to make it a 5-2 game in the seventh. The Yellow Jackets once more responded with two runs of their own to keep Radford at a distance in the bottom half of the inning.
In the eighth Cameron Pittman advanced all the way to third after drawing a walk in his at bat. Pittman came around to score thanks to an RBI ground out from Carson Bell. Despite a strong pitching performance over the final pair of innings, Radford wasn't able to complete the comeback as Georgia Tech held on for the 7-3 final over the Highlanders.
