Second Half Slump Slows Highlanders in Loss Against Panthers

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program fell in a tough one Saturday afternoon as a cold second half allowed High Point to pull away for the 67-50 final.

Senior Taniya Hanner was honored pre-game with her family as the Highlanders were hosting Senior Day. The graduate transfer had a big day as she finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds.

At the start of the game, it was Hanner who got things started at the free throw line. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker also hit a pair of free throws as both teams traded shots. A layup by Terissa Lavoile-Brice and a three by Hanner gave Radford a 9-6 lead. An 8-0 run by High Point erased that lead before Ashlyn was able to pull things closer at 14-11 going into the next quarter.

Right away, Radford responded with four straight points from Hanner to start the second up 15-14. Both teams traded layups on either end until Ashlyn sunk a three to give Radford a slightly bigger 22-19 edge. Layups from Ellie Taylor and Bria Beverly had Radford rolling and a 4-2 run to end the half gave Radford a 31-26 lead.

From there, though, the shooting would go cold. After shooting over 50% in the second quarter, Radford wouldn't shoot over 25% the rest of the way. Lavoile-Brice would extend the lead to 33-26, its highest point, to start the third before High Point used a 10-0 run to pull ahead. After Ashlyn stopped the run with a jumper from the free throw line, High Point responded with another 10-0 run to end the quarter up 51-38.

Radford's defense would hold High Point scoreless over the first three minutes of the fourth, but the shots just weren't falling. Radford got free throws from Hanner and Ashlyn to try and claw back but Radford wouldn't put together a run as High Point pulled away for the 67-50 final.

NOTABLES
  • The Highlanders shot 53% in the second quarter but shot 25% or less in each of the first, third and fourth quarters.
  • Three-point struggles continue for Radford as the team combined to go just 3-15 from deep with no quarter of play hosting more than one made three.
  • Similar to her first game of the season against High Point, Ashlyn filled in the box score again with 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
  • Hanner scored 15 or more points for the sixth time this season and for the first time since scoring 16 against Presbyterian at home.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Presbyterian (6-7) won their third straight conference game in dominant fashion 67-52 in a visit to Longwood (3-9).
  • USC Upstate (10-3) took care of business on the home court with an end-to-end victory over Gardner-Webb (3-9) 73-56.
  • UNC Asheville (4-9) won a thriller at home against Charleston Southern (6-6) in overtime 68-63.
