RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders fell to Campbell, 15-10, at home Friday night.
Olivia Hunter recorded a new career-high for single-game saves with 20, while
Margaret Gleason earned a hat trick.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth game, with both teams scoring their first points on free position goals.
Mady Cheney took advantage of the opportunity to put Radford on the board and tie the contest at one apiece. Campbell responded with back-to-back goals, but Gleason aligned her free position shot to meet the back of the net. To close out the quarter,
Laura Ferko added herself to Radford's scoring column as well.
The second quarter was the lowest scoring of the day with just two goals by each team as the defenses stepped up.
Molly O'Brien took notes from the first quarter and used a free position attempt to keep Radford in the game 5-4 with Campbell still in the lead. Radford earned the last points of the quarter however, with Gleason notching second goal off a feed by
Ashlyn Grogan.
The Highlanders weren't done scoring as they showed off their high spirits heading into the second half. O'Brien went unassisted for her second goal of the game and Grogan found her first opening of the game and scored. Campbell dominated the fourth quarter in goals, but Radford wasn't going down without a fight. O'Brien spotted an open Gleason for her to earn her first hat trick of the season. From there Campbell scored two in-a-row.
Maddie Abbott retaliated in front of the net for her first goal of the game.
Evie Gee earned her first goal of the season to close out the Highlanders' scorers.
Radford also shined on the defensive side, accumulating 21 ground balls. Ferko,
Taylor Rogahn and
Emily Strother all fought to earn three ground balls each. Cheney shined in draw controls winning five of Radford's 14. Hunter had herself a day earning her high of 20 saves, beating her previous record of 18 saves in a single game. She ended the game with a .571 save percentage.
