Softball Falls Just Short in Close Contest with Virginia

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program fell in a tight 7-3 finish Tuesday night against Virginia in rainy conditions on the home field.

The Highlanders got off to a good start in the game thanks to freshman Morgan Cooper who dialed up a clean first inning. Cooper made a diving catch while avoiding a runner in an acrobatic play that helped keep things scoreless.

In the bottom of the first, her offense backed her up scratching across a run. After Lexie Roberts led things with an infield single, a costly Virginia error put her at third base and Cassi Barbato at second. Emma Yates got the job done with a sacrifice fly that made it a 1-0 Radford lead, their second lead against a power program this season.

Virginia quickly responded with a home run to lead off the second inning to tie things at one-all. Radford's offense was held hitless in the bottom half and the Cavaliers opened things up with five runs in the third for a 6-1 advantage.

Radford got one back in the bottom of the third after Emily Smith led things off with a double. Roberts collected yet another hit to put runners at the corners before she stole second. Radford would get another run across after an Abby Wilson groundout made it a 6-2 game.

From there, Radford's pitching settled in behind Abby Peace who entered late in the third. Peace held the Cavaliers scoreless over four of the final five frames to keep Radford in range of a comeback.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wilson would strike again to try and ignite a comeback. Wilson struck for her second home run of the season, a solo shot to right center making it a 6-3 game. Virginia would get one more run in the seventh, however, and close things down in the final frame for the 7-3 final score.
