Softball Falls to Purdue and Sees Postponement in First Day at Marshall Tournament

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –The Radford softball program fell in their lone contest of Friday's action to Purdue 9-4 despite a late rally that saw the game tied headed into the final pair of innings.

Game 1
The Highlanders had a close battle that slipped away late in their first game of the day against Purdue. Abby Peace got the starting nod and was solid for Radford through the first 5.2 innings.

After a perfect first by Peace, Abby Wilson picked up her first of the game but was left stranded at first. A walk in the second came back to haunt Radford, as the Purdue runner would steal second and score on an RBI single for the 1-0 advantage. Peace would fire another clean third, however, to keep things close.

Emily Smith would single and steal second in the bottom of the third but wouldn't get any further. Purdue got a two-out RBI in the fourth to move their lead to 2-0. Rachel Smith would single and steal both second and third in the bottom half, but Radford remained scoreless.

After another two-out run in the fifth off an error gave Purdue a 3-0 lead, Radford finally struck in the bottom half. Amber Wolfe led the inning off with a walk and Kyndall Stanley replaced her on the bases. After Abby Bossler also walked, a groundout moved both runners into scoring position.

Lexie Roberts got an infield single that broke the ice and scored Stanley. A wild pitch would score Bossler, and Wilson collected yet another RBI with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

Radford seemed destined to keep things tied going into the bottom of the sixth after retiring the first two batters, but Purdue would reach base six straight times to plate five runs giving them their biggest lead of the day at 8-3.

Radford refused to go away quietly as Kari Shedrick drew another walk to start the bottom half of the inning. Wolfe would single to get Shedrick over to third and the duo would execute a double steal allowing Shedrick to score and make it 8-4.

Wolfe would be stranded at second to end the sixth and Purdue tacked on one more run via a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Wilson would pick up another hit in the form of a double in the seventh, but that was all for Radford in the 9-4 final.

Game 2
The scheduled second game of the day for Radford against Butler was postponed due to weather. The two squads may reschedule for Sunday, but a final decision has not been made.
