Offensive Explosion in the Eighth Leads to Highlanders Comeback Win

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team overcame a five-run deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh as an offensive explosion in the eighth would lead the Highlanders to a 10-6 win over Marist on Friday evening at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.

For the first four innings of today's contest both pitchers excelled as neither side was able to get anything going. The Highlanders did have an opportunity to put up a run in the bottom of the fourth as Cameron Pittman was able to find his way to third base, but three straight outs kept Radford from capitalizing on a potential run. Starting pitcher Scott Rouse kept the Red Foxes scoreless in the first four innings as he recorded six strikeouts and only one walk.

In the fifth Rouse would record a strikeout for the first batter he faced giving him seven strikeouts on the day, but Marist was able to get on the board first after a home run with two runners on would give the Red Foxes the lead and would add on another run later to have the 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the inning. Drew Biggerstaff would cut the deficit by one with one swing as he was able to hit a home run to right center, his first long shot as a Highlander.

Marist would tack on one run each in the sixth and seventh innings to make the score 6-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. With bases loaded Hunter Keen would take full advantage of the opportunity adding two runs for the Highlanders as he was able to reach first base on a fielder's choice as the Red Foxes were unable to get the out at home as Zack Whitacre and Carson Bell both were just able to reach safely making things 6-3 heading to the eighth.

An offensive explosion in the bottom of the eighth would see the Highlanders add seven runs. Gavin Troutman would single to shortstop to get on first, Corbin Grantham would walk advancing Troutman to second, and a Pittman walk would advance everyone up, leaving the bases loaded. Conner Butler would make the most of the opportunity as he would fire one off to right field to give the Highlanders the grand slam and the lead.

Zack Whitacre would immediately follow up Butler with a home run to right field, making it back-to-back home runs. Ben Williams would single to left field to bring in Bell for his second run of the evening and the last run came courtesy of Williams as he stole home to give the Highlanders the 10-6 lead. Jimmy Lovelace would come in at the mound to retire the side and give the Highlanders the win over the Red Foxes.
