RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team fell after three late runs by Marist in the eighth inning of their second game of the weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.
For the first inning of today's matchup, the Highlanders would get off to a good start scoring a pair of runs in the offensive half. The leadoff batter Cameron Pittman would be the one to find home first as Zack Whitacre would ground out to second base allowing Pittman to score the run. Austin Stalker would reach first off a fielder's choice and that would allow Butler to trot to home plate giving the Highlanders the early 2-0 lead.
In the second and third innings both sides were held scoreless. Marist had the opportunity to take the lead from the Highlanders in the third. With Bases loaded and just one out the Highlanders found themselves in a jam, but Dylan Howard and the Radford defense remained strong to get two straight outs to keep the Red Foxes at bay. A perfect throw by Zack Whitacre to his brother Brady Whitacre would get the out at home and a flyout to left fielder Jhonkeanu Perez would get the second out and allow Radford to escape the jam.
In the fourth and sixth innings, the Red Foxes scored a single run in each inning, tying things up heading to the seventh. For the eighth, Marist would take the lead as a homer to left field with two runners on would allow the Red Foxes to jump ahead of Radford at 5-2. The Highlanders had the opportunity to score a couple of runs late in the game but would fall short allowing Marist to take game two of the series.
