RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team added six runs in the final four innings to defeat Marist 11-6 in game three and secure the weekend series victory Sunday afternoon at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.
For the first two innings of today's matchup it was a defensive battle as both teams were unable to bring a run in. Freshman Raymond Ladd played a crucial part in keeping the Red Foxes at bay as he would record strikeouts in three of the first six outs of the game.
Marist would add a pair of runs in the top of the third to take an initial lead. The Highlanders would respond right away in the bottom of the inning as Mason Self would double to right center and Troutman would hit his first home run as a Highlander to drive in himself and Self to tie the game at two-all. A Conner Butler ground out would bring in Grantham for a run to make things 3-2 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth Ladd would respond retiring the side quickly to head to the bottom of the inning and allow the Highlanders to extend their lead further. Carson Bell and Hunter Keen would go back-to-back on home runs that would increase the lead to 5-2.
The Red Foxes would tie things back up after a three-run home run knotted the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth. However, in the bottom of the inning the Highlanders would respond right away with Pittman on third and Butler on second, Biggerstaff would be the one to answer the call as he would homer to right field and give the Highlanders the three-run lead back. Bell would add on another run later in the inning to make it 9-5 heading into the sixth.
The Red Foxes would add their final run of the game in the seventh but it wouldn't be enough as the Highlanders would add two more of their own in the bottom of the inning with a Keen triple to left field would drive in Bell and Perez who pinch ran for Biggerstaff to make the score 11-6 and give the Highlanders the series win.
