Radford Takes Doubleheader Sweep of UMES With Pair of 9-1 Victories

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program earned a doubleheader sweep over UMES Tuesday afternoon coming out victorious in both meetings 9-1. The Highlanders slugged five home runs over the two games while the pitching from Ellen Palya, Chloe Greene and Natalie Jones kept things locked down.

Game 1
After a shaky start that allowed the Hawks to score an unearned run in the top of the first inning, the Highlanders wouldn't look back as they immediately took a lead in the bottom half. After two straight outs, Cassi Barbato drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Rachel Smith put Radford back in front with one swing as she hit a two-run homer for the 2-1 lead.

Not satisfied, Abby Bossler kept the inning going with a walk. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and a strong single by Kari Shedrick scored Bossler for the 3-1 advantage. In the second the Highlanders had a much cleaner go of things as Ellen Palya picked up a strikeout and Amber Wolfe caught a runner trying to steal.

After coming up empty in the second, Palya picked up two more strikeouts in the third and Wolfe threw out yet another runner trying to steal second for a clean frame. In the bottom half, the offense got back to work doubling their run count.

After Abby Wilson led things off with a single Radford got its second home run of the day from Cassi Barbato, her first of the season. Up 5-1, Radford kept working as Bossler drew another walk and was replaced on the bases by Grace Bechtol who proceeded to steal second. A groundout moved her to third and she scored on a wild pitch for the 6-1 lead.

In the fourth, the Hawks tried to respond as the first three batters all reached with two walks and a single. Palya calmed things down with ease picking up two straight strikeouts and a flyout to keep the Hawks scoreless in the frame.

After an easier fifth, the Highlanders geared up for the run-rule walk-off in the fifth. R. Smith walked and Shedrick got her second single of the game while Taylor Breidt drew a long at bat that resulted in a walk. With the bases loaded, it was Wolfe who sealed the game clearing the bases with a triple to right scoring all three runners for the first 9-1 final.

Game 2
Similar to the first game, some shaky defense would open the game but this time the Highlanders wouldn't allow a runner to cross home. After an error began the inning a wild pitch moved a Hawk runner to third, the starting pitcher Greene got a strikeout and groundout to escape the threat unharmed.

In the first, Radford picked up right from where they left off in game one. With one out, R. Smith drew a walk and Shedrick brought herself and R. Smith home with a strong homer to left for the 2-0 lead. With two outs, Radford kept rolling as Bossler singled, Breidt singled, and Tori Boyd doubled to left for the 3-0 lead.

The Hawks would get a runner in scoring position again in the second, but Greene similarly retired the threat with another strikeout and groundout. The Highlanders offense wouldn't strike again until the fourth inning after the Hawks scored a lone run with two doubles in the top half to pull things within 3-1.

Wilson led off the inning with a pinch-hit appearance that sparked the offense. The senior crushed a home run to left field to push the lead back to three at 4-1. Lexie Roberts would follow with a single and Shedrick hit her second two-run homer of the day to push the lead even further to 6-1.

Similarly to game one, Radford led 6-1 headed into the fifth with a chance to force a run-rule victory. After Boyd led off the inning reaching base, Wilson doubled down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position.

Abby Peace stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and roped her first hit as a Highlander into center to score Boyd and Wilson making it 8-1. Amanda Lee subbed in as a pinch runner and a Roberts sacrifice fly would seal the deal for another 9-1 victory in five innings for Radford.
