Highlanders Fall to Upstate in Game 1 of Conference Play

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team fell to USC Upstate 15-5 in their conference opener on Friday afternoon at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.

For the first four innings in today's contest, the Spartans would be the ones to gain the early lead as they would secure a run in the first, one in the third and one in the fourth making it 3-0 heading into the fifth. The Spartans would once again add on a run to push the lead to 4-0.

However, the Highlanders would respond in the bottom of the inning as Drew Biggerstaff would single to right field to find first. Hunter Keen would homer to left field to bring in the two runs for the Highlanders. Troutman would double down the left field line, find third from a sacrifice bunt by Corbin Grantham, and Cameron Pittman would single to right field to finally bring him in for the run and cut the Spartan lead to one.

In the sixth, the Spartans would tack on seven runs to distance themselves from the Highlanders at 11-3. But in the bottom of the seventh the Highlanders would be able to add on a pair of runs as a ground out by Pittman would bring in Biggerstaff for his second run of the day. With bases loaded, Zack Whitacre would be hit by a pitch to allow Keen to walk home for his second run and bring the score to 11-5. In the eighth and ninth innings, the Spartans would add to their lead again, as they would record a pair of runs in each inning and ultimately finish Radford's conference opener at 15-5.
