RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team defeated USC Upstate 5-4 in a thrilling ninth inning to snap the Spartans' four game conference win streak on Saturday evening at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium, earning the Highlanders their first Big South win of the season.
Getting things started in the second inning the Highlanders would take the early lead as Brady Whitacre would single to left center to bring in Conner Butler for the run. The Spartans would respond in the top of the third putting up three runs to jump out in front of the Highlanders. However, the Highlanders would respond in kind with three runs of their own as a triple to left center off the bat of Zack Whitacre would drive in Keen and Pittman for the two runs for the Highlanders to tie the score back up. Butler would follow up with a sacrifice fly that would allow Zack Whitacre to reach home and reclaim the Highlander lead at 4-3.
In the bottom of the fourth the Highlanders would tack on their final run of the contest as Hunter Keen would double to left field to safely bring in Cameron Pittman for his second run of the evening. From the fifth to the eighth innings the Highlanders found themselves locked in a pitcher's duel. Howard would record three strikeouts from the fifth through the seventh and Lovelace would come in the eighth to record one of his own to keep the Spartans at bay for one more inning.
In the ninth, the Spartans would close the gap on the Highlanders' lead as a sacrifice fly would bring in a single run making it 5-4. With one out and a runner on third the Spartans looked to tie it back up as they would fly out to right field and attempt to bring the runner at third home. Corbin Grantham had other plans as he would catch the first out and throw a dime to Brady Whitacre at the plate to get the tag before the runner could score and secure the Highlanders' victory.
