Home Run Outburst Secures Series for Highlanders

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford baseball program secured their first conference series of the season over USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium after the Highlanders crushed four home runs leading them to a 12-3 win.

For the first inning of the series finale, the Spartans had a potential early run opportunity as they would get a runner on third. Starting pitcher Raymond Ladd had other ideas as he would strike out two batters in a row to keep things even heading to the bottom of the inning. The Highlanders would get on the board first as a ground out by Zack Whitacre would open the door for Hunter Keen to score the first run and give the Highlanders the early 1-0 lead heading into the second.

In the second the Highlanders would add on another after a ground out by Corbin Grantham would drag in Mason Self for the 2-0 lead entering the third. In that inning, Conner Butler would double to right center for Zack Whitacre to find home. Butler would find home as well with Carson Bell homering to right field to add on two more runs to the Highlanders' growing lead and give Bell his fifth home run of the season.

For the fourth, USC Upstate would add on two runs to cut the lead to 5-2 leaving the inning. In the sixth Cameron Pittman would aid the Highlander cause as he would double to right field for Brady Whitacre to find home plate with ease. For the seventh inning, the Highlanders added five runs to their lead to distance themselves from the Spartans. With Butler on third, Self would homer to left field to plate the two runs for the Highlanders marking Self's first home run of his career. With Troutman on third and Grantham on second, Pittman would homer to right field to add on the final three runs of the inning and making the score 11-2 heading to the eighth.

At the eighth the Spartans would add on a run in the inning, but Highlanders would return the favor in the bottom of the inning with Self homering for the second time of the day. A well-executed double play by the Highlanders in the ninth would cap things off and give the Highlanders the 12-3 victory and secure the series from USC Upstate.
