Offense Catches Fire as Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Winthrop

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader with Winthrop Saturday afternoon despite two strong offensive performances. Radford led start to finish in the opening game winning 7-3 before using a huge comeback effort in game two before ultimately falling 11-10.

Game 1
Similar to the first game of the series between the Highlanders and Eagles, it was Radford who struck first with a homer in the first inning. After Lexie Roberts started her big day with an infield single, Kari Shedrick stayed hot with a homer to center, her third straight game with a long shot.

Up 2-0, starting pitcher Chloe Greene kept the Eagles at bay with clean first, second and third innings. The Eagles would get a run back in the fourth to tighten things at 2-1, but Radford responded in kind in the bottom half.

Rachel Smith waited no time leading off the inning with a moonshot homer to left that put Radford back in front by two at 3-1. The Eagles would threaten with a runner in scoring position in the fifth, but Greene ended the threat with a strikeout.

Radford's offense geared up for a big offensive output in the bottom half of the fifth. Emily Smith drew a walk, Roberts picked up another single, and Abby Wilson singled to seemingly load the bases until an errant throw allowed E. Smith to cruise home for the 4-1 lead.

A wild pitch would score Roberts and Barbato capped the rally with an RBI single scoring Wilson to make it a 6-1 Radford advantage. Greene would dial up a scoreless sixth before the offense added on more run to pad their lead.

After a great sacrifice bunt from Averee Atkins moved Grace Bechtoll to third, Roberts picked up a two-out RBI single to the shortstop to extend the lead to 7-1. Winthrop wouldn't go quietly in the seventh as the first four Eagles all reached base making it just a 7-2 lead.

Freshman pitcher Morgan Cooper would enter the game to try and seal things up. Cooper would get two straight outs and after a tough walk Cooper got one last pop up to seal the game as a 7-3 victory.

Game 2
Radford showed heart in the second game of the day rallying back from as much as a six run deficit to force a tight finish. The Eagles scored early putting up six runs in the first two frames to immediately jump into a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Radford would get a spark after two straight singles from R. Smith and Amber Wolfe. Natalie Jones would get a fly ball into the outfield which allowed R. Smith to come home and score to make it 6-1.

After the Eagles got a run back in the top of the third via a solo homer, Radford again responded for another lone run. After another Roberts infield single, she stole second and got to third thanks to an error. Shedrick grounded out, but Roberts sped home to make it a 7-2 game.

Cooper, who entered the game in the second in relief, quickly recorded two straight scoreless frames to keep Radford within reach. The Highlanders would keep chipping away in the bottom of the fifth.

Roberts again started the rally with a bunt, steal second and get to third on a wild pitch. Shedrick would double to bring Roberts in and Cassi Barbato would immediately follow her with another double to shorten the deficit to just 7-4.

In the sixth, the Highlanders came alive to fully push ahead in the comeback attempt. Jones kicked things off with a powerful homer to right making it a 7-5 game. Amanda Lee singled, E. Smith drew a walk and Roberts got another bunt hit to load the bases.

After a pitching change, Radford made it 7-6 thanks to a wild pitch. With two runners still in scoring position, Shedrick gave Radford the lead with a single scoring E. Smith and Roberts. The Highlanders weren't content with the one run lead as R. Smith hit a long homer to left to put Radford up 10-7.

The Eagles also had one more rally left in store as they would get four runs off a grand slam without recording an out to go back up 11-10. Radford would get two runners on in the bottom half, but the rally halted there for the 11-10 final.
